As part of the Cook Park Library Children’s Renewal Project, we’re excited to announce the creation of a new play space, designed specifically for our youngest patrons and their caregivers. It will be in the heart of our new children’s area, and there’s a very important reason for that: it’s an investment informed by science — in children during their early years of life.
The Importance of Early Childhood Experiences
Research shows that brain development during the first years of life is incredibly rapid. During these formative years, children learn and grow in the context of personal relationships, with their early experiences shaping their future health, behavior, and capacity to succeed in life.
As a library, we’re in a unique position to support both children and their caregivers during this critical period. We are a trusted community resource where caregivers can find support as they guide their children through these early stages of development.

Why Play Matters
Play is central to how children grow across all areas of development during this critical period. Our new play space is designed to support this important process. It will feature a variety of play opportunities, allowing children to explore and grow while their caregivers engage in nurturing interactions. The space will also offer adults a chance to recharge, with a comfortable environment where they can take a moment for themselves, while still keeping an eye on their children.
Creating Connection & Community
Positioned near the windows to take advantage of natural light, the play space will be an inviting area for families, fostering a sense of connection and community. It will also be near the new café area for snack time. The proximity to our information desk will ensure that staff are readily available.
At its core, the play space is more than just an area for play — it’s a resource for promoting learning, fostering relationships, and supporting the development of both children and their caregivers during this vital stage of life. We can’t wait to see it in action and to offer this special place to the families we serve.
