Genetic Genealogy Resources

One of our members gave a great presentation at our Genealogy Networking Group meeting last night. He shared how his DNA results helped him connect with a previously unknown branch of his family. This prompted lots of discussion and a list of websites and organizations to turn to for help in understanding and making the most of our genealogy DNA results.

Gedmatch is a website that allows you to upload your raw DNA data for free so that you can share your results with others. Create an account. Upload your DNA data from Ancestry, Family Tree DNA, or 23andME. You may also want to upload your GEDCOM for better genealogical analysis. This site comes highly recommended.

Ysearch, also free, was created by FamilyTree DNA to compare other companies’ results with theirs.

The International Society of Genetic Genealogy is full of resources for those who want to learn more about DNA and genealogy. Complete with a beginner’s guide, a glossary, and its own Wiki, this site provides lots of answers and opportunities to learn more.

CAGGNI, the Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois, has its own DNA Special Interest Group that meets quarterly. Check their webpage under “CAGGNI Events” for specifics.

Cook Library also has some helpful books in our genealogy collection. Click on the covers to find them in our online catalog:
