Get ready for some library upgrades! Improvements to both Aspen Drive Library in Vernon Hills and Cook Park Library in Libertyville are coming this October. Aspen Drive Library will see improvements and enhancements to the plaza at the main entrance and Cook Park Library will get updated windows. Both buildings will remain open while work is being done, aside from a few temporary measures — details below.
Both of these projects are funded from reserves set aside by the Library Board of Trustees for infrastructure improvements and maintenance. These reserves help keep our buildings attractive and well maintained for your comfort, safety, and enjoyment.
We appreciate your patience during these improvements and, as always, welcome your questions and comments. Give us a call at 847-362-2330 or send us an email.

ASPEN DRIVE LIBRARY
WHAT: Front plaza enhancements — replace brick pavers with concrete; replace light bollards; improve landscaping; and add an electric vehicle charging station
WHEN: October 5–October 28
The plaza at the main entrance is getting a makeover! The brick pavers and benches are starting to show their wear and tear, creating potential tripping hazards. To ensure your safety while entering and exiting the building, the pavers will be replaced with poured concrete for a smooth and even surface.
Enhanced landscaping and the replacement of pathway lighting will also create a more welcoming and attractive first impression of our 12-year-old building.
We are also adding an electric vehicle charging station to accommodate anticipated increased demand. That’s one more way we’re keeping up with technology to better serve you!
Main Entrance CLOSED
until October 21
The main entrance and the inside book return slot will be off limits while work is being done. Please follow the signs to the temporary entrance through the Meeting Room on the south side of the building to ensure the safety of visitors and workers.
Book Return & Drive-Up Window OPEN
The Drive-Up Window and book return slots remain open and a drop box for materials will be conveniently placed inside the Meeting Room.
Parking
The two east rows of parking spaces closest to the main entrance will also be closed off during construction, including the accessible parking spaces. The accessible parking spaces have been moved to the south parking area near the Meeting Room. Please see the map for locations or give us a call if you need assistance, 847-362-2330 x1406.
COOK PARK LIBRARY
WHAT: Replace Fiction Room windows and install floor outlets near study tables
WHEN: October 26–December 23
Our 40+-year-old drafty windows and frames in the Fiction Room need to be replaced. With the new, energy-efficient windows, the view of Cook Park will be as vibrant as ever and will also help keep heating and cooling costs down. In addition, four new floor outlets will be installed for easy access to power for your devices.
Fiction Room CLOSED
starting October 27
In order to stay safe and out of the way of workers, the Fiction Room will be unavailable. But don’t worry, fiction books and audiobooks can still be checked out! We encourage you to place holds before coming to the library to ensure your items are ready for you at the Drive-Up Window or on the hold shelves inside. Staff will retrieve items from the room when they can and let you know when they’re ready.
Don’t forget the science fiction and popular book club collections on the Lower Level! We will also have additional fiction and audiobooks on display that will be easily accessible.
If you need assistance placing a hold, please visit or call the Reference Desk at 847-362-2330 x1302.
Temporary Study Rooms
All three study rooms will also be unavailable. In addition to working at tables around the building and in the pods near the adult computer area, temporary study rooms will be set up around the building. To reserve one of these temporary spaces, please call 847-362-2330 or visit the Reference Desk. Study rooms at Aspen Drive Library remain available to reserve online, in person, or by phone during construction.
