Genealogy Networking Group Wrap-Up

On the first Thursday evening of each month an enthusiastic group of genealogists meets at Cook Park to share ideas, break down brick walls, learn a little, and have some fun. Last week we did all of the above.

We welcomed a couple of new attendees this month and answered their questions about software programs and online family trees. One person has connected with Texas relatives she didn’t know about, but she hopes to meet them in person this summer. Another person shared the fun fact that her new sewing machine can embroider a family tree; just upload a Gedcom and away you go! (Well, it might take a little more effort than that, she will get back to us when she has read the manual.)

Sonia gave a demonstration of American Ancestors, one of the genealogy databases provided by Cook Library. We initially thought American Ancestors was just for researching New England ancestors (since it’s provided by the New England Historic Genealogy Society) but we found much more: California records, an index of vital records from the American Canadian Genealogical Society, and lots of New York records. This database is only available in the library so come in to Cook Park or Aspen Drive and see what you can find.

Make plans to join us for next month’s meeting. We will be at Aspen Drive Library in Vernon Hills, the meeting starts at 7 p.m. Register to attend. We hope you will join us with your own questions and discoveries to share.
