Circulation Policy

All residents of Cook Memorial Library District age 4 and older are eligible for a library card. Present current proof of residency within the district to obtain a library card. For children under age 14, a parent or guardian’s signature is needed. Library cards must be presented when checking out or renewing library materials.

Cards issued to residents of this library district may be used at most public libraries in Illinois. Additional ID may be required.

Borrowing Limits

You may check out as many items as you are willing to be responsible for, subject to the following limitations:

    • 2 Hot Pick DVDs
    • 2 video games
    • 10 DVDs (includes Hot Picks)
    • 10 magazines
    • 5 MyMediaMall titles
    • 40 audio CDs

Loan Periods

4-Week Loans:

    • LINKin materials

3-Week Loans:

    • books
    • CDs
    • audiobooks
    • kits 
    • series DVDs
    • nonfiction DVDs

1-Week Loans:

    • all other DVDs
    • magazines
    • video games

Loan Determined by Lender:

    • Interlibrary loan materials
    • microfilm materials


Most materials can be renewed two times as long as there are no reserves pending. Renew by phone at 847-362-0438 (please have your library card and the items you're renewing handy) or by logging into your account. You may also renew in person at either library or on the Bookmobile; a library card or valid ID is required. Hot Picks may not be renewed. LINKin items may be renewed once, as long as there is not a reserve pending at the originating library.


10¢ per day on overdue books and magazines—maximum fine $5
10¢ per day on overdue CDs, CD-ROMs, and audiobooks—maximum fine $5
$1 per day on all overdue DVDs and video games—maximum fine $10
$1 per hour on overdue overnight reference books—maximum fine $5

Overdue charges must be paid prior to checkout if the total exceeds $10.
Payment accepted for fines is nonrefundable.

Lost or Damaged Items

Replacement of lost or damaged materials is list price plus a processing fee of $5.


When DVDs or videogames are 3 days overdue, a notice will be mailed or emailed to the patron. For all other materials, a notice is mailed or emailed when an item is 15 days overdue. 

If any item has not been returned by 29 days after its due date, a second overdue notice is sent to the patron and card privileges are suspended. For any item not returned by 45 days after its due date, a letter is sent to the patron. Accounts are referred to a collection agency when materials are 60 days overdue, and an additional $10 processing fee will be added to the account.

Notices are not sent for outstanding fines.

Reserving Items

All circulating items with the exception of Hot Picks may be placed on reserve, with a total limit of 50 reserves per account. No more than 10 items may be reserved through Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL) at any one time. Interlibrary Loan Services and LINKin requests are for residents of the Cook Memorial Public Library District only.
