Friends of the Library Book Sale
A patron contacted Ear this week to ask how to email the Friends of the Library for information about donating books and DVDs for future Friends’ sales.

Due to very limited storage space, we have been unable to accept donations for Friends' sales in recent months. However, in preparation for next month’s sale, we will begin accepting donations June 1.
The sale will be held in the meeting room at our Cook Park location. Here are the hours:
Friday, June 21 – 12:30pm – 6pm: Preview sale for members of the Friends. You can join at the door for $5.
Saturday, June 22 – 9am to 4pm: Open to the public
Sunday, June 23 – 1 pm to 4pm: Open to the public
Proceeds from the sale will be used by the Friends to fund the library's reading programs (the costs of supplies and prizes) and finance equipment and supplies not covered in the library budget.

Question: What is the Early Learning Center all about?
To answer this question, Ear turned to Melissa Henderson, Children's Department Manager. She responded with an explanation and an invitation:
Thinkers as diverse and brilliant as Albert Einstein and Mr. Rogers have agreed that children learn through play. While children don't need to be taught to want to play, they do need have access to well-designed, well thought out programs and activities that encourage play with a purpose: learning!
The Early Learning Center offers a hands-on literacy play space for children ages 0-5 years and their caregivers. Located in the Children’s Department at Cook Park Library in Libertyville, the ELC has activities designed to stimulate, model and encourage repetition of fun activities that help children become ready to read.
Each month, the ELC offers a selection of activities, manipulatives, and books that feature a concept such as numbers or colors or a topic such as families or health & safety. The activities have been developed to support the Every Child Ready to Read initiative, which addresses 5 critical pre-literacy skills: talking, writing, singing, reading, and playing.
The ELC is part of the library’s commitment to early literacy; in addition to the ELC, the library has long offered engaging storytimes and programming and Early Literacy Kits, which extend these activities into the home life of the child.
Next time you’re in the Cook Park Library, take a look inside the ELC. Better still, make a special visit with an early learner!

Be Money Smart
Almost all of us could benefit from being smarter about money. Luckily, Money Smart Week is just around the corner. The purpose of MSW is to provide consumers with information that will help them manage their personal finances better. It was started by the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank in 2002 and has grown bigger each year as more financial institutions and libraries have joined the effort.
Cook Memorial is offering two programs for Money Smart Week, which this year is April 20 – 27.
To Your Credit
Monday, April 22 7pm Cook Park Register
We're partnering with Libertyville Bank & Trust to bring you this FDIC program. Learn how to order, read and analyze your credit report, as well as ways to repair your credit history.
Understanding Investing: what you need to know before you commit a penny
Thursday, April 25 7pm Aspen Drive Register
Investment specialist and Wall Street veteran Michael Heumos, PhD, will discuss investing in terms of financial planning, financial markets, diversification and asset allocation. He will also reveal the worst mistakes investors make.
Visit the Money Smart Week website to find related activities, including games for kids such as Financial Soccer and Peter Pig’s Money Counter. For adults who enjoy the mobile app Scavenger Hunt with Friends, there is an MSW scavenger hunt (with cash prizes!) that runs the entire month of April. This fun activity will test your financial know-how as well as your photographic creativity.
Finally, don't forget that you can gain financial knowledge 52 weeks a year by using your Cook Memorial Library Card to access our Morningstar and Standard & Poors databases.

Election on April 9
Are you planning to vote in the local election on April 9? Not sure whether you are registered? Look at the Lake County Clerk’s Voter Power page to check. The dates for registering at the library are past, but during the grace period you can still register and vote at the Lake County Central Permit Facility at 500 West Winchester Road in Libertyville. The Facility is located behind Winchester House and the Lake County Department of Transportation. Hours are Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. Contact the County Clerk’s office at 847.377.2410 for further information on grace period registration.
Six candidates are vying for three seats on the Cook Memorial Public Library District Board of Trustees in the election. The candidates are: incumbent Bonnie Quirke (Libertyville), incumbent Ann E.
